Nintendo Switch, Grand Theft Auto 5, FIFA 20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot were the big winners in January acrosss Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.
This is all according to GSD figures [the data project owned by European trade body ISFE] analysed by GamesIndustry.biz. The data features physical retail numbers from 17 countries, and digital download data from 16 major publishers in nearly 50 markets. The full details of which are at the bottom of the article.
Just over 15 million AAA games were sold across EMEAA territories during January, a slight increase of 1.1% compared with the same period 12 months ago.
Due to the ageing console cycle, sales of games machines are down 15.8% in January compared to the same period a year before, with revenue down 13.1%. The only console to sell better in January 2020 vs 2019 was Nintendo Switch (up more than 17%). Switch accounted for almost 52% of all consoles sold across the retail markets, with the Neon version the most popular individual product.
The increase in game sales was primarily due to an increase in full game downloads, with Grand Theft Auto 5, FIFA 20 and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege the biggest selling digital titles. Just under 8.45 million full games were downloaded last month across the markets.
Physical game sales took a slight tumble, down 5.6% year-on-year to 6.6 million games sold. The physical games market performs best when big new games are launched, and there was a lack of significant titles released last month. By comparison, Resident Evil 2 and New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe were released in January 2019.

byuu v1.4 is released. byuu is a multi-system emulator that focuses on accuracy and ease-of-use. It is currently in early release beta status. byuu is an upcoming multi-system emulator that aims to provide the accuracy of higan, with the ease-of-use of bsnes. It seeks to accomplish this by catering to the common 99% of use cases, rather than higan, which tries to cater to every niche. As such, certain advanced functionality will not be available in byuu; however, the emulator will be significantly easier to use, like bsnes.
Planned roadmap:
v1: support for gamepad mapping and the save state manager
v2: support for other controller types (mice, light guns) and multiple-players
v3: support for Famicom Disk System, Super Game Boy, and Sega CD emulation
v?: support for per-system input mapping, cheat codes, movie recording, and run-ahead functionality
v?+X: optional scanline renderers for each core to boost performance substantially
v?+Y: additional emulation cores from outside of higan (PS1, Saturn, N64 would be most promising!)

Due to the fact that there was no lightweight API to display on-screen overlays until the release of Tesla last month, no usable FPS counter solution was available for the Switch even though it may not sound like much work.
Want an FPS counter for your Switch? Now, you can have it although the overlay itself takes a good chunk of the screen for now! ()
Now, the prayers of those who want to know how well their Switch is performing have been answered as masagrator, who’s been behind many 60FPS mods for commercial games, has released NX-FPS letting you see FPS in real-time without external hardware like a capture card.
NX-FPS is a SaltyNX plugin which collects FPS data from commercial Switch games and it currently supports the NVN and EGL APIs used in games. As of right now, it can log two types of data namely:
- PFPS – Pushed Frames Per Second (unsigned integer)
- This counts how many frames were pushed to the display in the last second
- FPS – Frames Per Second (decimal value)
- This is calculated from average frame time and gets refreshed with every new frame
Currently, data generated from this plugin can be used with masagrator’s own Status Monitor Overlay as long as you have version 0.4 or above installed and it lets you see FPS statistics in real time. Other developers can also use NX-FPS in their own homebrew overlay solutions as it functions separately from Status Monitor Overlay.
You may read more and download NX-FPS from this link and use it with Status Monitor Overlay. It’s important to state that NX-FPS may cause a kernel panic if you close a game less than 10 seconds after the Nintendo logo appears.

First shared here as always, enjoy!
This is something I have been working on for a while. I can't take full credit, the original code for this clone is from 2000, then it was worked on a few years after that by others. The code was a mess!
I gave it a a huge refactor and clean up code-wise, then added loads of stuff to make it more faithful to the real game: new graphics, character select, new blocks, multiplayer...

Nintendo has told employees at its Redmond, Washington offices to self-quarantine after one of its workers tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"We have determined that the individual had contact with other employees and we have notified those employees to the situation. All impacted employees are now self-quarantining, whether they are experiencing symptoms or not," the company said.
Nintendo has also given its employees throughout Washington and California the option of working from home as a result of the pandemic.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that Washington state has seen 457 reported cases of COVID-19, more than any other state in the US.

Nintendo and Lego have teamed up to create a line of Super Mario Lego sets.
The two companies announced the partnership today and gave a first look at the toys, which center around an electronic, Bluetooth-equipped Mario figure with screens in its chest and face that can collect virtual coins as it interacts with levels made of Lego bricks.
Lego chief marketing officer Julia Golden said the sets would be a "highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids."

Nintendo has been triumphant in defending itself against claims that the Switch's Joy-Con controllers infringe on patents owned by Gamevice.
The mobile accessories firm filed a lawsuit against Nintendo back in 2018, claiming that the console/handheld hybrid copies ideas from its own detachable controllers for smartphones and tablets.
However, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board has invalidated all 19 of Gamevice's claims against Nintendo, according to Law360.
"Gamevice does not contest Nintendo's showing that these dependent claims are unpatentable, nor does Gamevice offer any other argument or evidence in support of patentability," the board said.

A Washington court has denied Nintendo's move to dismiss a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of unfair and deceptive business practices regarding defective Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers.
Though it denied the dismissal of the suit, the district court did at the same time grant a request from Nintendo to refer the lawsuit into arbitration, in accordance with requirements in Nintendo's End User License Agreement.
The lawsuit was brought last year by US law firm Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith, with the plaintiff Ryan Diaz, and now includes 18 total plaintiffs.

Great news for French speakers: the third opus of the Mario series, “Super Mario Bros 3″ for NES, has been translated to French! The translation was written by hlabrande and the hacking was done by Wave.
This translation to French is not entirely based on the English text; the choice was made to write a translation that is closer to the original Japanese. Thus, Princess Peach, and not Princess Toadstool, is writing you letters; the suit is a tanuki suit and not a raccoon; the awkward joke at the end was removed to get closer to the Japanese version; and Peach’s second and third letters, inexplicably switched in the English version, have been put back in the right order.
This is technically not the first translation of the game: the game was remastered and released on the Game Boy Advance under the “Super Mario Advance 4″ title, and that game was released in Europe, with a French translation. Being a remaster and all, there were no space constraints to work under. The GBA version also implements the changes mentioned above, which was a factor in deciding to implement them in this translation.

MegaZeux (or MZX) is a game creation system (GCS) initially released in late 1994 by Alexis Janson. MegaZeux is heavily inspired by Tim Sweeney's ZZT. Like ZZT, MZX was originally released as shareware and the world editor portion of the program was included for free, allowing third parties to create their own worlds without even registering.
MZX is officially supported on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Android, Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii, Switch, and the PSP. Older ports exist for AmigaOS 4, GP2X, and Pandora. MZX has also been ported to other platforms such as OpenSolaris, HaikuOS, and the Sega Dreamcast.

Gambatte SpeedRun R6 Build 717 is released. Fork of https://github.com/sinamas/gambatte with changes related to Pokemon speedrunning. Gambatte is an accuracy-focused, cross-platform Game Boy Color emulator. It is based on a few thousand corner-case hardware tests, as well as previous documentation and reverse engineering efforts.
Gambatte SpeedRun Changelog:
Emulation accuracy
Merged all 2019 upstream gambatte accuracy updates by sinamas (fixes TCG, Crystal Clear, perhaps others)
Fixed emulation of some original Game Boy games (i.e. no GBC enhancements) on GBC/GBA/GBP (mostly affects non-Pokemon games)
Hard reset rework
Subframe hard resets now supported on GBP platform (Gen 2 save corruption routes, TCG card duplication should have parity with console)
Game audio now cuts immediately when the hard reset fade begins, to match GBP behavior
Rare quirky behavior (e.g. resets that take 1 or many frames too long, or Blue NSC crash where hard reset was never processed) should be mostly mitigated
Input handling fixes
Simultaneous Up+Down or Left+Right inputs now have proper "cancellation" behavior to match GBP
Using the same keyboard/joystick input for multiple GB inputs is no longer possible (was already "not allowed")
Fixed stray issues with German/Portuguese keyboard layouts (and perhaps others) that could cause numerous erratic behaviors
Added warning when using Shift as a bound key (causes issues when used in combination with keys "modified" by Shift)
Added a deadzone threshold configuration option for joystick users
Miscellaneous
Added official support for macOS 10.13+; binaries will be added with the upcoming release
Instant .sav creation for Gen 1/2 and TCG (at end of game's save routine)
Initial bootrom "error message" for first-time users was made slightly more informative
Fixed bug with default input settings for first-time users; other default settings also made more sensible
Savestates from r649/r664 should remain unaffected by changes (autosplitters are mostly ok, but will need updating to detect the new gambatte_speedrun.exe program name)

Cemu v1.17.3 is released. Cemu is a Nintendo Wii U emulator that runs commercial games. Highly experimental software to emulate Wii U applications on PC.
Cemu Changelog:
general: Added a workaround for Cemu not launching on Windows 10 1709
general: Added button for checking online mode requirements to account settings
gamelist: Improved identification of updates/dlc
gamelist: Games which are identified as an update will again show up in the list, but only if no base game is found
This is a workaround for modified game dumps where the update data was merged into the base game. Please always use the File -> Install update/dlc option in Cemu
gamelist: Fixed a bug where a game could appear more than once if multiple game paths were set
CPU/JIT: Code translation (PPC -> x64) is now done asynchronously on a separate thread
The previous implementation would do translation synchronously on the CPU emulation thread.
This could lead to micro stutter in situations where a game hit a lot of new code (e.g. on first loading screen)
OpenGL/Vulkan: Added a safeguard to prevent crashes when games try to use a depth texture with an invalid format
Vulkan: Fixed an issue where depth to color texture copies would use the wrong shader
coreinit: Fixed a crash in OSCalendarTimeToTicks (#268)
nn_boss: Fixed SpotPass always assuming an id of 80000001 instead of using the one selected by the user
Note:
(#xx) refers to bug tracker issues resolved by this change. See http://bugs.cemu.info/projects/cemu/

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan.
According to Famitsu data, the title sold 1.88 million games in just three days in the country. By comparison, the previous 3-day Switch record was held by Pokémon Sword and Shield, which sold over 1.36 million copies (both games combined). The previous standalone game record was Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which managed 1.24 million units in three days.
The game's sales far outstripped the opening performance of its predecessor, Animal Crossing: New Leaf on 3DS. That game achieved just under 722,000 sales during its opening three days.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a major hit in the UK.
Nintendo's critically acclaimed sequel has sold more copies in its first week on sale than the launch sales of all previous Animal Crossing games combined, including the spin-offs. The launch is 3.5 times bigger than the last game in the series, 2013's Animal Crossing: New Leaf on Nintendo 3DS, which was the previous biggest launch for the series. It is also the biggest single game launch on Nintendo Switch since the console came out, although if you combine the sales of Pokémon Sword and Shield together, those games enjoyed a bigger first week.
This only factors in physical sales, it does not include digital download numbers, which may have been higher than usual considering the concerns around the COVID-19 virus that has seen the UK Government recommend that citizens stay indoors. Nintendo does not share digital download data externally.
It's no surprise to learn that Nintendo's game was No.1 in the boxed charts this week, comfortably ahead of Doom: Eternal, which debuts at No.2. Doom: Eternal's physical launch sales are roughly a third smaller than its predecessor, but the drop may not be quite so significant if we factor in digital sales. Unfortunately, Bethesda also doesn't share digital download figures, so we won't know how the game really performed.

Nintendo of America has closed its repair service centres due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The repair centres are being closed as a "preventive measure... and in accordance with federal and local guidelines," Nintendo of America has said.
No timeframe was offered for when the centres will open again, and repairs in progress will be put on hold until that happens.
"If the repair center was able to receive the repair order, it will remain there until repair services resume," Nintendo said.
Products that have been sent but not yet accepted will be returned to the customer as "undeliverable." Nintendo will extend the warranty on its products for the amount of time that its repair centres are closed.

The Nintendo Switch is quite the popular console right now, as many in lockdown are finding out. Hardware shortages have been noticed across the world--especially in Nintendo's home country--with demand overwhelming the short supply of the system. Not to mention, with the success of the recently released Animal Crossing: New Horizons, even the slightly less popular Nintendo Switch Lite handhelds are flying off the shelves. This has lead to a sharp jump in sales for the Switch hardware line, which are up more than 300,000 units over last week, in Japan. This surge in sales also means that the Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed the Nintendo Wii in terms of units sold in Japan. Though the Nintendo Wii was incredibly popular and still boasts over 101 million global sales, it only sold 12.7 million units in Japan before the system was discontinued in 2013. Currently, the Nintendo Switch is sitting at 12.8 million systems sold, putting it just above the older console's figures.

Nintendo's mascot is celebrating his 35th anniversary this year, with some possible remasters on the way to mark the occasion, if some rumors are to be believed. News website Video Game Chronicle issued a story claiming that Nintendo would be releasing "several" major games, which would include "most of the Super Mario back catalog, remastered for the Nintendo Switch". VGC's sister site, Eurogamer, also corroborated the story, with their own sources hinting at Super Mario Galaxy being one of the remastered mystery games. Yet another reporting site, Gematsu, made its own separate claims that Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario 3D World would be involved, alongside a brand new Paper Mario reveal. Only time will tell if these rumors turn out to be true, but they certainly would be major announcements, if so.
